How to put it together
- 1
Put on the gray opossum onesie or your DIY gray hoodie and sweatpants base.
- 2
If using a onesie, pull the hood up to display the opossum face and ears. If DIYing, slide on the felt ear headband.
- 3
Attach the long pink tail to the back of your pants or onesie using a safety pin, letting it drag slightly or curve upward.
- 4
Put on the black knit gloves to complete the paw look.
- 5
Step into your black shoes or comfortable slippers.
- 6
Optional: Apply a small dab of pink makeup to the tip of your nose to mimic an opossum's snout.
Makeup & hair
Keep your hair simple or tucked away under the hood. For makeup, paint the tip of your nose light pink with face paint or lipstick, and draw a few thin black whiskers on your cheeks using an eyeliner pencil.

Opossum costume FAQ
- What is the difference between a possum and an opossum costume?
- While scientifically different, in North America, 'possum' and 'opossum' are used interchangeably for costumes, featuring gray fur, a white face, and a pink tail. Australian possums look more like small brown rodents with furry tails.
- How do I make a cheap DIY opossum tail?
- Stuff a pink knee-high sock or pink pantyhose with cotton balls or paper towels, slide a wire hanger inside to make it bendable, and safety-pin it to your pants.
- Is this costume suitable for cold weather?
- Yes, a fleece onesie is exceptionally warm and allows you to wear thick thermal layers underneath.
Did you know? Opossums are the only marsupials native to North America, meaning mothers carry their tiny babies in a pouch just like kangaroos.
