Yellow and Black Cardboard Body
Two medium cardboard boxes taped together with yellow duct tape to form the main cab of the excavator.
DIY: Use recycled diaper or shipping boxes and wrap them entirely in bright yellow duct tape.
Cardboard Digging Arm
A multi-jointed arm cut from flat cardboard, painted yellow, and attached to the front of the box with a plastic fastener so it can pivot.
DIY: Cut a boom and bucket shape out of leftover box flaps and secure them with a metal brad.
Shoulder Straps
Thick black webbing or wide ribbon attached to the inside of the box to suspend the vehicle from the child's shoulders.
DIY: Use wide black duct tape folded in half so it is no longer sticky.
Construction Hard Hat
A classic bright yellow plastic construction helmet to complete the operator look.
Safety Vest
A miniature neon orange or yellow safety vest with reflective silver stripes worn over a simple t-shirt.

How to put it together

Cut the top and bottom flaps off a medium cardboard box so the child can stand inside it.

Wrap the entire outer surface of the box in bright yellow duct tape, adding black duct tape stripes along the bottom to simulate tracks.

Cut a boom arm and bucket shape out of a flat piece of cardboard, wrap them in yellow tape, and draw hydraulic lines with a black marker.

Attach the digging arm to the front of the box using a heavy-duty paper fastener or bolt so it can rotate up and down.

Secure two parallel strips of black webbing inside the box to act as suspender straps, adjusting the length to fit the child's height.

Dress the child in a simple t-shirt, jeans, and the safety vest, then place the box straps over their shoulders.

Finish the look by placing the yellow plastic hard hat on their head.
